It’s not unusual for a woman to ask if she will be able to have another child after getting a Mommy Makeover. Sometimes the question comes up prior to surgery and for others it comes up some time afterward. It is fairly standard to suggest a woman wait to have a Mommy Makeover surgery until after she has finished building her family, but things often change and the wish for another pregnancy comes up.
If you feel sure that you are ready for a Mommy Makeover, with no planned pregnancies in your future, this is an ideal situation. However, if you are not totally confident that you are done having children, let Dr. Lee know during your preoperative planning consultation. He can choose to do specific procedures in a certain way that will make it easier if you do have another pregnancy. Alternatively, you could decide to do a mini–Mommy Makeover with only liposuction to improve your abdominal wall and hips, then using the harvested fat to refill your breasts’ volume is common. After the final pregnancy, you can then return for a full tummy tuck and more extensive breast surgery.
The various surgeries that are part of a Mommy Makeover do not leave a woman unable to conceive, carry a pregnancy, or breastfeed. It is considered completely safe to have another child after a Mommy Makeover. Neither mother nor child are going to experience problems because of the past surgeries.
If your Mommy Makeover included a tummy tuck, your abdominal wall will still be able to stretch enough to allow your uterus and baby to grow unhindered. There is no risk of growth restriction or the need for an early delivery because of an abdominal wall that will not stretch.
If you had a breast augmentation, it may be slightly more difficult to breastfeed but most women have no difficulty providing enough milk to nourish their newborn child. Implants only occasionally affect milk supply. For women who had significant changes in sensation after their breast augmentation, this change could make it more difficult to breastfeed but not impossible. Discussing all of your options with Dr Dave Lee is advisable during your surgical consultation.
After Your Pregnancy
You do have a significant chance of undoing some of your surgical results from your Mommy Makeover with the new pregnancy. Your body will stretch and grow to accommodate the pregnancy and breastfeeding, and you could end up with a sagging abdominal wall or drooping breasts once again.
It is usually possible to have revision surgery to repair your abdominal wall and re-lift your breasts. There is no harm to having a tummy tuck or breast surgery multiple times during your lifetime.
