What IsLower Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is an eyelid surgery that tightens the muscles or tissues of your eyelids by removing extra skin or fat. Lower blepharoplasty is specifically targeted to help improve the appearance of sagging or baggy skin or wrinkles under the eye.

Many patients choose to get this surgery along with other procedures, including an upper blepharoplasty, brow lift, and facelift. Dr. Lee, your specialist for Lower Blepharoplasty in Chelmsford is ready to discuss your aesthetic goals and establish a tailored treatment plan to meet them.

What Happens During Lower Blepharoplasty?

Although this surgery can take about one hour, your actual operating time may be longer if you choose to have other procedures done at the same time.

You may also be placed under local or general anesthesia during the surgery, especially if combined with other procedures. During this procedure, Chelmsford Lower Blepharoplasty specialist, Dr. Dave Lee, will locate the fat and/or skin that needs to be removed, make an incision, and then remove the targeted area.

Once done, he will close the incision with stitches, which will allow the lower eyelid to heal and tighten as it does so. After your surgery is done, you’ll be taken to a recovery room to come out of anesthesia. You may have a follow-up to make sure you're healing correctly and address any additional concerns you may have.

Lower Blepharoplasty FAQs

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. Blepharoplasty can improve the appearance of puffiness or “bags” under the eyes, excess skin, and fine lines and wrinkles.

This kind of procedure is recommended if you’re uncomfortable with folds, saggy skin, or bags under your eyes. It’s often done with other procedures, such as an upper blepharoplasty or facelift, and together this can rejuvenate your features and help you regain your self-confidence.

Because the incision will be made on the inside of the lower eyelid, there are usually no visible scars. If the skin does need to be removed, the incision is placed right at the lash line to make it less noticeable.

First, anesthesia will be administered. For blepharoplasty alone, a combination of local anesthesia and IV sedation may be used. For some patients, only local anesthesia is needed. Blepharoplasty is often combined with other plastic surgery procedures which may instead require general anesthesia. Incisions will be made in locations such that the scar will blend in nicely with the natural contours of the eye once healed. For the lower eyelid, incisions may be made just below the lower lash line and/or inside the lower eyelid, also known as a transconjunctival incision. Excess skin and fat are meticulously measured and removed and incisions are closed. Sometimes, additional procedures, such as chemical peel, are needed to treat and improve the appearance of the lower eyelid skin.

Lower blepharoplasty in Chelmsford is generally done for cosmetic reasons and is therefore not usually covered by insurance providers. However, there are financing and payment options available, which you can discuss with Dr. Lee during your consultation.

It’s possible that there will be some bleeding, soreness, and bruising due to the sensitivity of your under-eye skin. Many patients choose to take at least two weeks off of work or other obligations such as school to speed the healing process. Side effects include bruising, bleeding, and soreness. Most people take 10 to 14 days to recover before returning to work.

While there is likely to be some soreness and tenderness, this will not last long. You can take over-the-counter pain relievers. It’s also important to apply cold compresses for two days after your Lower Blepharoplasty in Chelmsford, to help with both swelling and bruising and overall healing.
