Many people consider wrinkles and sagging skin the biggest signs of aging, but one of the main reasons for these changes stems from the loss of facial volume. This can lead to exaggerating your facial features by making areas such as your eyes and cheeks look flatter.

And the contours of your temple appear bonier. Dr. Dave Lee is a board-certified Chelmsford plastic surgeon who believes plastic surgery is an art and a science. Dr. Lee can help you sculpt your body and help return that youthful quality to your appearance.

What Is Facial Fat Grafting?

Facial fat grafting involves moving fat from a different part of the body to your face. It’s also known as a micro-lipo injection, facial fat rejuvenation, fat injection, fat transfer, or autologous fat grafting.

You decide which part of your body you want the fat removed (many patients choose the stomach or thighs) via liposuction. This fat is then reinjected in the areas of your face you would like more volume. Common areas include the lips, the cheeks, under-eye areas, and the folds between your nose and the corners of your mouth.

What Happens During Facial Fat Grafting?

At PURE Cosmetic in Chelmsforf facial fat grafting is a surgical procedure that uses your own natural tissues.

Because there are multiple parts of the body involved, facial fat grafting involves three main steps:

  • Fat is removed from one part of the body via liposuction.
  • The fat is separated out from the rest of the body fluid
  • These fat cells are injected into targeted areas in your face.

Given that there is generally a small volume of liposuction performed, there’s the option to use either local anesthesia to numb your face or general anesthesia to produce mild sedation so you’re not fully conscious during the procedure.

This is particularly true when you’re doing this along with other procedures. In particular, facelifts often occur at the same time as facial fat grafting, in which case you would typically be under general anesthesia. Dr. Lee will give you a detailed medication regimen to take after your procedure to minimize discomfort and improve healing.

Facial Fat Grafting FAQs

Fat grafting is a procedure in which fat is harvested from one part of the body, typically the abdomen, hips, or thighs. The fat is then processed and injected into the desired area. In the face, fat grafting can be used in almost any area, similar to how an injectable filler would be used, to restore volume and youthfulness. Facial fat grafting is often combined with a facelift and other facial plastic surgery to optimize results.

First, anesthesia is administered. Typically, a general anesthetic is used. Next, the donor site is prepared by using a tumescent solution which helps break up the fat and decrease bleeding. Next, the fat is harvested by using liposuction. This fat is then processed and prepared for injection. Lastly, the fat is carefully and meticulously injected into the planned areas to achieve the desired outcome.

If you’re feeling concerned at the loss of fullness in your face and want to regain volume around your cheeks, eyes, and even jawline, fat grafting can provide a long-term solution, giving you much-needed ease of mind and higher self-esteem.

If done under local anesthesia, areas of the face will be numbed with a topical numbing cream or lidocaine. If done under general anesthesia, you will be asleep during the procedure. After you’re out of surgery, you’ll be sent to a recovery room to allow you time to come out of anesthesia. While you will likely feel mild discomfort, most patients report little pain.

It can take 3-4 days before you’re feeling healed enough to return to work. However, most patients decide to wait 2-3 weeks before work in order to allow the majority of the swelling and bruising to subside. It’s especially important to minimize exercise and vigorous movement. You’ll likely have swelling and bruising which is completely normal. If timing this procedure before an important event, it is best to allow 6 weeks of healing if possible in order to allow as much time as possible for recovery

Many people consider fillers to plump up their lips and cheeks, but these kinds of off-the-shelf fillers do get somewhat broken down by the body over time, resulting in the need to get repeat injections every four to six months. While some patients do not mind, many others want a more permanent alternative. In facial fat grafting, your body will grow new blood vessels to attach to the fat cells that have been injected, and about 60% of the fat that is injected becomes permanent. This results in long-term effectiveness. Many patients decide to undergo two or three treatments of fat grafting to get the best results.

The cost for facial fat grafting in Chelmsford at PURE Cosmetic Center is dependent on the number of areas you want to be treated and if the procedure is done in conjunction with any other surgeries. Otherwise, there are financing and payment options available for purely cosmetic procedures.
