WHAT IS BREAST AUGMENTATION?

Many women decide to enhance their breasts if they feel their breasts are too small for their body. It can also correct asymmetrical breasts and add volume that was lost due to aging, dieting, or nursing.

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that increases breast size, shape, or projection. It is also known as breast enhancement. Most often, augmenting the breast involves placing implants into the breast pocket, although today, there are other options such as fat grafting.

What is the difference between Breast Augmentation and a Breast Lift?

Breast implants can re-inflate and lift sagging breasts to a degree. However, if you have extensive laxity and redundant tissue in your lower breast pole, a breast lift may be the better option.

A breast lift (mastopexy) does not increase breast size. It can even result in losing a cup size. Many breast lift patients elect to have breast implants placed during their lift. That way, they not only regain perky breasts but also restore volume that was lost due to aging, pregnancy, nursing, or dieting.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF BREAST AUGMENTATION?

Whether your breasts never developed, are smaller than you would like, or lost volume due to age, it is never too late to correct these issues with a Concord breast enhancement. Dr. Lee’s patients generally feel more confident and attractive after receiving breast implants. It is incredible what breast enhancement can do to make your entire physique appear more balanced and proportional.

Some of the reasons women choose these procedures include:

  • Added fullness and cleavage
  • Feeling more confident and sexy
  • Improved breast symmetry and proportionality
  • Ability to wear more styles of clothing, brassieres, and swimwear
  • Restoring a perky appearance to breasts after pregnancy or losing weight
AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR BREAST AUGMENTATION?

The ideal candidate does not smoke, is in good health, and has expectations and goals that are in line with reality. During your consultation, Dr. Lee will go over your medical history and let you know if you fit the criteria for these or related breast procedures.

Here are some issues breast enhancement addresses:

  • Micromastia: Breasts never developed
  • Breast asymmetry: One breast is larger than the other
  • Breast reconstruction: Restoring breasts after mastectomy
  • Small breasts: Breasts are disproportionately small for your body
  • Volume loss: Breasts appear small or deflated due to pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight loss

If you have any of the above aesthetic concerns, schedule a consultation for Concord breast augmentation with Dr. Lee to learn about your treatment options.

Types of Breast Implants

We offer various implant styles for our Concord patients to choose from. Choosing the best breast implant type for your needs depends on the look and feel you want to achieve as well as whether you are thin, have ptosis, or lack breast tissue. During your consultation for breast augmentation Concord plastic surgeon Dr. Dave Lee will show you the different implant styles that are available so you can make the right choice for you.

Round Silicone Breast Implants

Round silicone implants come pre-filled with soft, flexible silicone gel. They come in all different profiles and base widths, ensuring a custom fit to your body. Patients who want uniform fullness at the upper and lower breast pole love the cleavage they achieve with round breast implants. Furthermore, silicone gel mimics the weight and feel of natural breast tissue, so the augmented breasts have a more realistic texture compared to saline-filled implants.

Teardrop or Gummy Bear Implants

Made entirely of silicone, the newest silicone implants have a teardrop shape. Formally, they are known as anatomic breast implants because they are the most anatomically correct shape. This style has more fullness in the lower breast pole and less fullness up top, resembling the shape of natural breasts. Teardrop implants are an excellent choice if you want an extremely natural look. Teardrop breast implants have a slightly firmer, gummier texture than traditional silicone implants.

Saline Implants

Saline implants work a bit differently. They are made from an outer shell of silicone, which Dr. Lee inserts into the breast pocket while they are empty. He then fills the implant shell with saline liquid while you are on the operating table.

Textured Implants

Textured breast implants have a texturized shell. Developed to prevent implant shifting, the texture has a gripping effect to keep the implant in place. Research shows there is less risk of capsular contracture as well. Textured implants are more commonly used for complex breast revision cases. Most patients opt for smooth, round implants.

Saline vs Silicone Breast Implants: Which is better?

Dr. Lee offers both saline and silicone implants to accommodate your preferences. However, over the years, he has come to prefer silicone implants over saline for various reasons. Here is an overview of what to expect with each type.

SALINE IMPLANTS

  • Advantages: Most affordable option; Surgeon fills implants to the ideal size while you are on the operating table
  • Drawbacks: Implant rippling is more likely to occur; Does not feel as natural as silicone gel; Implants deflate rapidly if ruptured, putting you in the position for an unexpected surgery to remove and replace them

SILICONE IMPLANTS

  • Advantages: Looks and feels extremely natural compared to saline implants; Mimics real breast tissue; Leaks slowly if rupture occurs, giving you plenty of time to schedule implant removal and replacement surgery
  • Drawbacks: Costs slightly more than saline implants; Surgeon and patient must select implant size ahead of time
Your Procedure

While you are under general anesthesia, Dr. Lee will make an incision. He typically places the incision in the inframammary crease or inferior breast fold.

Patients who are susceptible to keloid scarring may do better with a transaxillary, or armpit, incision. He rarely uses the transumbilical approach, which involves passing the implant through an incision at the navel. There is also the periareolar incision method, through which the implant passes through an incision around the areolar margin.

Above vs Below the Muscle Breast Implants

Dr. Lee can place breast implants either above or below the muscle. Submuscular breast implants are necessary for thin patients to decrease the chance of implant rippling and visibility. The pectoralis muscle is a thin sheath about 1/4” thick. It provides coverage to hide the edges of the implant. Placing implants below the muscle requires dissection to elevate the muscle off the ribcage.

Your Recovery

For our patients in Concord breast augmentation is a day procedure. You will need someone to drive you home. While you can technically return to work and driving within a day or two, it is important to avoid overexerting yourself early in the recovery process.

Do not lift anything heavy for two weeks. Avoid vigorous exercise for approximately four to six weeks. Dr. Lee may suggest wearing a compression bra to ease swelling. Bruising, if present, should subside within two weeks. If you are prescribed medications, use only as directed.

Attend your follow-up appointments as scheduled so Dr. Lee can look after you and monitor for complications. Scar care can begin once the incision heals.

Your Results

It takes six months to a year for the breast implants to settle into their ultimate position. Your breasts may appear firm and ride high on the chest at first. The implants will settle down as the swelling dissipates.
