What are Chemical Peels?

A chemical peel is a solution used to improve your skin. It removes the outermost layer of skin in order to allow for the regeneration of new skin. It is commonly used on the face, neck, and hands. A peel can be used to treat acne scars, irregular pigments, rough texture, sun-damage, and fine lines and wrinkles.

There are several types of peels that can be classified as superficial, medium-depth, or deep. Depending on the strength, chemical peels can be ideal for treating conditions such as melasma (dark, discolored patches on your skin), dyschromia (patchy, red, or purple discolorations), acne, or other conditions such as solar keratoses (dry scaly sun damage spots), deep wrinkles, and scars.

TCA Peels: TCA peels are cosmetic skin treatments using trichloroacetic acid (TCA) that come in a variety of strengths or concentrations of acid. A TCA peel works by removing dead skin cells and stimulating new skin cell growth. TCA peels can help you achieve younger-looking skin. They can also be used to treat certain skin conditions, like melasma and acne scarring, and can be used on the face and other areas of the body. They are considered medium strength.

Salicylic Acid Peels: Salicylic acid peels are made from an acid naturally found in willow bark and wintergreen leaves but can be manufactured in a lab as well. It is in the beta-hydroxy acid family. These peels exfoliate skin cells and have an anti-inflammatory effect on the skin, which may be helpful in treating acne. It is considered a mild peel. Lower strength salicylic peels are available for home use, but application by a qualified medical professional will likely provide improved and more uniform results.

Jessner Peels: Jessner peels are an additional cosmetic skin treatment. They are effective in reducing melasma and pigment concerns in darker skin and can be an effective treatment for acne scars. The Jessner peels remove the top layer of skin, uncovering the smoother, healthier skin below. These peels are made up of a combination of acids: lactic acid, salicylic acid, and sometimes trichloroacetic acid. Some Jessner peels also contain resorcinol. The Jessner peel is usually a medium peel but can be used as a superficial peel for a faster healing time.

Preparation

Depending on your needs and the time of recovery preferred, we’ll recommend the course of treatment that ensures your best Chelmsford chemical peel results. You may be instructed to use a tretinoin cream and/or a skin lightening agent to condition the skin for a peel. This is usually done for at least 4 weeks prior to the peel. Treatment

When you come in for the peel, your skin will be prepared for the procedure, which will include a comprehensive cleansing of your skin. The peel can be performed while you are awake. A deep peel is done in a surgical setting and will be done under anesthesia.

Depending on the type of peel, you may need cool compresses followed by a soothing cream or lotion. Vaseline may be applied for deeper peels to help your skin retain moisture while it heals. After the peel is done, your face may have some redness and oozing. This is normal.

The Right Peel For Your Skin

If you have a superficial peel, you can expect that your skin may be pink afterward, followed by scaling. This should last a few days You may need additional peels to get the results that you want.

With a medium peel, the healing time is about a week. The skin may be red and swollen. You will need to soak your skin daily for some time, followed by applying an ointment. You may be prescribed medications and you will need to avoid the sun until your skin heals.

A deeper peel will result in a two-to-three-week healing period and the area will be lathered with ointments after the procedure.
