Breast augmentation, or augmentation mammaplasty, is one of the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures in the world.
In 2021, nearly 365,000 patients chose to enhance their breasts in the United States, an increase from 300,378 procedures in 2017.
As in many cosmopolitan areas in the U.S., Lexington breast augmentation is on the rise. Dr. Dave Lee, board-certified plastic surgeon and founder of PURE Cosmetic Center, has performed countless breast enhancement procedures for Lexington patients who demand the most natural-looking results.
Drawing on his refined sensibilities and carefully honed surgical techniques, Dr. Lee conducts procedures with unmatched skills to ensure a realistic outcome. He will assist you in selecting the ideal breast implant style for your physique.
Many of our high-profile patients prefer to be private with their cosmetic procedures and prefer that their photographs not be placed online. At your consultation, you will be shown photographs of patients who have given us permission to display their before and after pictures.

Breast implants are the most popular breast enhancement method, although newer procedures have evolved. One newer method is the autologous fat transfer technique, which involves adding volume to the breasts using the patient’s purified fat harvested from other areas using liposuction.
The ideal candidates for breast augmentation are in good health, both physically and mentally. It is important to have breast implants because you want to, not to appease someone else. Patients with deep-seated body image issues are generally not the best candidates.
During your private consultation, board-certified Lexington plastic surgeon Dr. Lee will conduct a physical examination, review your medical history, and discuss your goals. Based on this information, he will let you know if you are eligible for any breast enhancement prodecure.
Augmentation is for patients who have one or more of the following concerns:

Dr. Dave Lee offers various implant styles for his Lexington breast augmentation patients. At your consultation, he will go over each available style and help you pick the appropriate implant shape and size to fit your needs.
Breast implants can be round or teardrop-shaped.
Classic breast implants have a round shape, distributing volume equally within the upper and lower breast poles. This style is excellent for patients with upper pole volume loss after breastfeeding or pregnancy as it provides the most fullness up top and creates beautiful cleavage.
Teardrop implants have more of an anatomically correct shape, adding volume in the lower portion of the breast and a gentle slope on the upper portion, mimicking the shape of natural breasts. This option is ideal for patients who want an extremely realistic appearance.
Breast implants can be filled with saline solution or silicone gel.
Silicone implants contain a soft, flexible silicone gel. The gel resembles the weight and feel of living breast tissue, ensuring the most natural result possible. According to statistics, 88 percent of breast implant patients chose silicone implants in 2018.
Saline implants have a silicone shell that is filled with saline. Unlike silicone implants that come pre-filled with gel, Dr. Lee places the saline implants into the breast cavity while empty. He then fills them with sterile saline solution until reaching the pre-determined size.
Dr. Lee makes an incision in the inframammary fold (the crease underneath the breast), within the armpit, around the areola, or through the umbilicus (belly button). He will discuss his preferred incision method and help you choose what’s right for you at your consultation.
Next, he dissects a pocket or cavity within each breast, which houses the implants. Once the implants are in the optimal position, he closes the incision with dissolving sutures and applies a bandage
Depending on your needs, Dr. Lee will place the implants either below or above the pectoralis muscle.
The muscle acts as a sheath to hide the implant margin. Below-the-muscle implants are best for thin patients who have a higher incidence of implant rippling and palpability.
Above-the-muscle implants are suitable for women with enough glandular tissue to hide the implant effectively or for individuals with mild breast sagging.
It takes time for breast implants to settle into their ultimate position. What you see immediately after surgery is not your final result. Most patients initially notice that their implants ride high and firm on their chest. As the inflammation settles down over the coming months, the implants relax and expand into the breast pocket, a process known as the ‘drop and fluff’. As this occurs, the breasts take on a softer and more natural appearance.
Our Lexington breast implant patients are unlikely to experience serious pain during the recovery period, but those with a flat chest or a tight skin envelope may experience slightly more post-operative discomfort. Any pain is easily managed with over-the-counter medication. Most of Dr. Lee’s patients are back to work and socializing within a few days to a week.
The implants take six months to a year to settle into their final position. Your breasts may appear firm and ride high on the chest at first, but the implants will relax as the swelling dissipates in the days following surgery. Typically, doctors urge patients to hold off on critical evaluations of implant movement until three months after the procedure, longer if you are an athlete with stronger chest muscles.
Implants generally do not interfere with breastfeeding. Some data suggest cosmetic breast surgery can impact the milk supply, although most patients go on to nurse without any issue.
Breasts develop during puberty. The ideal time to consider a surgical procedure is once the breasts have fully matured, typically occurring around age 18. For this reason, the FDA has approved saline implants for people 18 and over and silicone implants for those 22 and up. There is no upper age limit, meaning you can undergo mammaplasty later in life so long as you are in good health.
Some patients report varying degrees of change in nipple sensitivity after augmentation mammaplasty caused by swelling in breast tissue. As swelling goes down and neural pathways begin to re-establish, patients will see a slow return of sensitivity. This could take just a few weeks, but some report a loss of breast sensation for several months.
