What isBreast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a cosmetic procedure aiming to improve breast size, shape, and projection.

Breast implants are the most popular breast enhancement method, although newer procedures have evolved. One newer method is the autologous fat transfer technique, which involves adding volume to the breasts using the patient’s purified fat harvested from other areas using liposuction.

What is the difference between Breast Augmentation and a Breast Lift?

A breast lift corrects ptotic breasts and downward-pointing nipples, while breast augmentation increases volume.

When you enquire about breast augmentation Lexington plastic surgeon Dr. Dave Lee will be honest with you to help you decide which procedure is right for you. He routinely performs both as standalone procedures and in conjunction with one another.

Breast enhancement aims to enhance the size of breasts that are disproportionally small or asymmetrical. Breast implants also have a subtle lifting effect of restoring perkiness to sagging breasts. Patients with extensive ptosis and excess tissue in the lower breast pole may require a breast lift (mastopexy).

Breast lift surgery addresses sagging breasts by lifting them but does not add volume. For this reason, many patients choose to have a breast lift with implants. This allows them to regain perky breasts while also adding volume. Implants are optional; You can also have a breast lift without implants if desired.

What are the benefits of Breast Augmentation?

There are many reasons women choose to enhance their breasts. Some have small breasts that never developed, others have breast asymmetry or volume loss due to aging, weight loss, or breastfeeding, and others require implants as part of breast cancer reconstruction.

Regardless of your reasons for considering breast enhancement, the results can positively impact your life. For example, many patients report psychological benefits such as improved self-esteem, renewed confidence, and a more positive body image overall. In addition, there are tangible benefits such as being able to wear a preferred style of brassiere, swimwear, tops, and lingerie, which can make getting dressed easier and even lead to more intimacy for both partners.

People who feel sexy and confident tend to feel good about themselves and are often perceived more favorably by others. If you are dissatisfied with the breasts you see in the mirror, then a breast augmentation is one way you can improve your appearance and boost your self-image.

Some of the key benefits include:

  • Feeling more attractive and confident
  • Improved breast symmetry and proportionality
  • Ability to fill out swimwear, blouses, and lingerie
  • Improved fullness, cleavage, and forward projection
  • Renewed perkiness and volume after pregnancy or weight loss

Am I a good candidate for Breast Augmentation?

The ideal candidates for breast augmentation are in good health, both physically and mentally. It is important to have breast implants because you want to, not to appease someone else. Patients with deep-seated body image issues are generally not the best candidates.

During your private consultation, board-certified Lexington plastic surgeon Dr. Lee will conduct a physical examination, review your medical history, and discuss your goals. Based on this information, he will let you know if you are eligible for any breast enhancement prodecure.

Augmentation is for patients who have one or more of the following concerns:

  • Mild ptosis
  • Breast asymmetry
  • Loss of breast tissue after mastectomy
  • Micromastia, or under-developed breasts
  • Disproportionately small breasts relative to your physique
  • Volume loss due to aging, weight loss, or a past pregnancy

If you have any of these concerns, call PURE Cosmetic Center to schedule your consultation with Dr. Lee today.

Types of Breast Implants

PURE Cosmetic Center Logo

Dr. Dave Lee offers various implant styles for his Lexington breast augmentation patients. At your consultation, he will go over each available style and help you pick the appropriate implant shape and size to fit your needs.

Breast Implant Shape

Breast implants can be round or teardrop-shaped.

Round Implants

Classic breast implants have a round shape, distributing volume equally within the upper and lower breast poles. This style is excellent for patients with upper pole volume loss after breastfeeding or pregnancy as it provides the most fullness up top and creates beautiful cleavage.

Teardrop implants

Teardrop implants have more of an anatomically correct shape, adding volume in the lower portion of the breast and a gentle slope on the upper portion, mimicking the shape of natural breasts. This option is ideal for patients who want an extremely realistic appearance.

Silicone vs Saline Breast Implants

Breast implants can be filled with saline solution or silicone gel.

Silicone Implants

Silicone implants contain a soft, flexible silicone gel. The gel resembles the weight and feel of living breast tissue, ensuring the most natural result possible. According to statistics, 88 percent of breast implant patients chose silicone implants in 2018.

Saline Implants

Saline implants have a silicone shell that is filled with saline. Unlike silicone implants that come pre-filled with gel, Dr. Lee places the saline implants into the breast cavity while empty. He then fills them with sterile saline solution until reaching the pre-determined size.

Your Procedure

Dr. Lee makes an incision in the inframammary fold (the crease underneath the breast), within the armpit, around the areola, or through the umbilicus (belly button). He will discuss his preferred incision method and help you choose what’s right for you at your consultation.

Next, he dissects a pocket or cavity within each breast, which houses the implants. Once the implants are in the optimal position, he closes the incision with dissolving sutures and applies a bandage

Above vs Below the Muscle Breast Implants

Depending on your needs, Dr. Lee will place the implants either below or above the pectoralis muscle.

The muscle acts as a sheath to hide the implant margin. Below-the-muscle implants are best for thin patients who have a higher incidence of implant rippling and palpability.

Above-the-muscle implants are suitable for women with enough glandular tissue to hide the implant effectively or for individuals with mild breast sagging.

Your Recovery

Breast enhancement is an outpatient procedure. Someone must be present to drive you home.

While it is possible to return to work and driving a day or two later, it is important to exercise restraint and keep your activity light. Avoid any heavy lifting for at least two weeks. Heavy-impact exercise can resume around four to six weeks post-op.

Swelling and implants that appear firm and high are normal at first. The brunt of these side effects should subside in six to 12 weeks. Bruising should resolve in approximately two weeks. Remember to take pain medications only as prescribed.

Dr. Lee will see you in his office for routine follow-up appointments. This is necessary so he can monitor your healing.

Your Results

PURE Cosmetic Center Logo

It takes time for breast implants to settle into their ultimate position. What you see immediately after surgery is not your final result. Most patients initially notice that their implants ride high and firm on their chest. As the inflammation settles down over the coming months, the implants relax and expand into the breast pocket, a process known as the ‘drop and fluff’. As this occurs, the breasts take on a softer and more natural appearance.

Lexington Breast Augmentation Frequently Asked Questions

Our Lexington breast implant patients are unlikely to experience serious pain during the recovery period, but those with a flat chest or a tight skin envelope may experience slightly more post-operative discomfort. Any pain is easily managed with over-the-counter medication. Most of Dr. Lee’s patients are back to work and socializing within a few days to a week.

The implants take six months to a year to settle into their final position. Your breasts may appear firm and ride high on the chest at first, but the implants will relax as the swelling dissipates in the days following surgery. Typically, doctors urge patients to hold off on critical evaluations of implant movement until three months after the procedure, longer if you are an athlete with stronger chest muscles.

Implants generally do not interfere with breastfeeding. Some data suggest cosmetic breast surgery can impact the milk supply, although most patients go on to nurse without any issue.

Breasts develop during puberty. The ideal time to consider a surgical procedure is once the breasts have fully matured, typically occurring around age 18. For this reason, the FDA has approved saline implants for people 18 and over and silicone implants for those 22 and up. There is no upper age limit, meaning you can undergo mammaplasty later in life so long as you are in good health.

Some patients report varying degrees of change in nipple sensitivity after augmentation mammaplasty caused by swelling in breast tissue. As swelling goes down and neural pathways begin to re-establish, patients will see a slow return of sensitivity. This could take just a few weeks, but some report a loss of breast sensation for several months.
