What Is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a facial surgical procedure that refines and contours the nose by making alterations to bone, cartilage, and soft tissue.

This procedure is sometimes performed exclusively for cosmetic reasons but can also be used to correct functional issues such as breathing problems. There are several techniques and types of rhinoplasty Boston area residents have available to them and your surgeon can determine which may be ideal for your situation.

Open Rhinoplasty

This technique allows full access to internal nasal structures by making a tiny incision between the nostrils. The surgeon can then lift the skin and tissue and work on the bone and cartilage underneath. If septum or nose tip issues need to be addressed, this method is ideal.

Closed Rhinoplasty

A slightly less invasive technique, closed rhinoplasty utilizes incisions made only inside the nostrils. This method can be used when only limited access is needed to internal structures and does not result in any visible scarring.

Ethnic Rhinoplasty

The term ethnic rhinoplasty is used to describe a rhinoplasty technique where refinements and adjustments are made with the preservation of ethnic or racial identity in mind. The natural features of the nose and face can simply be enhanced without being drastically changed.

Revision Rhinoplasty

In some cases, a previous rhinoplasty surgery may not have provided the results a patient was hoping for or may have been "botched" by an inexperienced surgeon. In order to remedy this, revision rhinoplasty can be performed to address concerns and get closer to the patient's original aesthetic goal.

Benefits of Rhinoplasty

Your nose is one of your most noticeable facial features. If the shape or size of your nose causes you to lack confidence in your looks, rhinoplasty can help. Rhinoplasty offers a way to refine, sculpt, and achieve the look for your nose you've always wanted. If the concerns are functional, rhinoplasty can help you breathe and sleep better and improve your overall quality of life. Our Boston area rhinoplasty patients enjoy:

  • Smooth nasal profile
  • Contoured nose shape
  • Greater facial harmony and proportions
  • Better airflow and fewer sinus infections

Am I a Candidate for Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty surgery is a good option to address many nasal-related concerns. This procedure can solve cosmetic imperfections such as a crooked or droopy nose, functional issues like a deviated septum as well as congenital problems or injury-related concerns. Good candidates for our Boston rhinoplasty procedures are in generally good health and have reasonable expectations for the outcome.

Consultation and Preparation

The goal of a consultation is to get to know you and your aesthetic goals and design a treatment plan based on your individual needs. We will discuss the procedure itself, any preparation requirements, and the rhinoplasty recovery process.

The PURE Rhinoplasty

Performed while the patient is under general anesthesia, rhinoplasty typically takes two to four hours. First, incisions will be made, and then cartilage, bone, tissue, or some combination of the three will be delicately adjusted. Finally, the surgeon closes the incisions with sutures and places protective bandages over them.

Results, Recovery, and Aftercare

Most patients require about a week off of work or heavy household duties for recovery. Please follow all the recovery guidelines provided, as these are crucial for healing. It can take up to a year or more for all swelling to subside and optimal results to be revealed.

RhinoplastyFAQs

Most patients experience very little pain with rhinoplasty. Discomfort can typically be well managed with over-the-counter pain medications.

This procedure is very safe when performed by a qualified surgeon. As with any surgery, there is a small risk of infection, bleeding, or a poor reaction to anesthesia.

Since changes are made to skin, cartilage, and underlying structures, rhinoplasty is a permanent treatment.

Depending on the weight of your frames and the specific maneuvers performed during your surgery, it is recommended to wait anywhere from one to six weeks before wearing glasses.

Since this procedure is designed around the specific needs of the patients, the total cost of a rhinoplasty will always have variables. A revision rhinoplasty is a much more complex procedure and will thus be more expensive than a primary (first time) rhinoplasty. This can be discussed at your consultation.

At PURE Cosmetic Center, all rhinoplasty surgeries are considered cosmetic surgeries. Breathing concerns can be addressed at the same time as your cosmetic procedure. However, if you have purely functional and breathing concerns and do not have any concerns with the nose shape or appearance, we recommend that you see an Otolaryngologist (Ear, Nose, and Throat specialist) who can help with breathing.
