WHAT IS SEMAGLUTIDE?

Semaglutide was first FDA-approved as a treatment for Type 2 diabetes in adults. Together with diet and exercise, it can help control blood sugar levels and reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in people with Type 2 diabetes. In the following years, physicians and researchers noted that Semaglutide injections for weight loss were effective in people with Type 2 diabetes. This led to studies that demonstrated these injections could reduce an individual’s appetite and promote significant weight reduction. In 2021, these injections became a viable option for people in Boston to lose weight.

HOW DO WEIGHT LOSS INJECTIONS WORK?

Semaglutide belongs to a class of drugs called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists. The drug mimics the GLP-1 hormone released in the gut in response to eating. The hormone is integral to glucose metabolism and plays a crucial role in regulating blood sugar. Semaglutide binds to the GLP-1 receptors in the pancreas and stimulates them to release insulin; while at the same time, inhibits the release of glucagon, which is a hormone that raises blood sugar.

Through research, scientists have also found that Semaglutide also has an action in the brain to control appetite and make you feel full. When the GLP-1 receptors are activated in the hypothalamus in your brain, it triggers the feeling of fullness and it slows your stomach from emptying food into the small intestines, called delayed gastric emptying. Each of these factors, collectively, can result in sustained weight management.

BENEFITS AND SIDE EFFECTS OF SEMAGLUTIDE

As with all medications, there are benefits and side effects that our patients in Boston should be aware of with weight loss injections. Some obvious benefits are a reduction in appetite and an increased feeling of being full, which affects how much food you eat and therefore helps you lose weight without feeling like you are starving. These injections can also help normalize your blood glucose levels, which helps people who are pre-diabetic. This means your insulin level is slightly higher than normal but not high enough to be diagnosed with diabetes.

By lowering your blood glucose levels and weight, the injections can also reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke. That being said, Semaglutide is not a miracle drug and is not for everyone. There are several mild side-effects you might experience, such as dizziness, fatigue, and headaches. Since the drug slows the gastrointestinal system, individuals may also experience diarrhea, constipation, nausea, vomiting, or distension (bloat). Gastrointestinal issues are the most common side effects reported. These may be reduced by starting at a lower dose. Since Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist, the drug must be avoided if you have a history of gallbladder disease, pancreatitis, or medullary thyroid cancer. People with multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome Type 2 are also not good candidates for the drug.
