Raise Your Confidence

What is Breast Lift Surgery?

Breast lift surgery (mastopexy) is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to create more youthfully shaped breasts and to elevate the nipple into a more youthful position. By removing excess skin and reshaping underlying breast tissue, a breast lift can restore the youthful position, fullness, and shape of the breasts to eliminate sagging or a deflated appearance. Breast lift surgery involves repositioning the nipple-areola complex higher for beautifully natural-looking results.

Breast lift surgery does not involve breast implants or increasing breast size. In fact, a breast lift by itself usually involves removing loose skin and reshaping the lower pole of the breast and thus decreases the size of the breast slightly. Some women choose to combine a breast lift with breast augmentation using implants or fat for added volume and fullness. Incision patterns vary depending on the degree of sagging, with standard techniques including the "lollipop" and anchor-shaped incisions. Breast lift surgery delivers firmer, more uplifted breasts with improved shape and positioning for a long-lasting, youthful appearance and enhanced confidence.

If you have very loose and stretchy skin along with heavy breast tissue, a scaffold or “internal bra” may be helpful to give more support to your tissues.

What is the Breast Lift procedure like?

Breast lift surgery is a personalized procedure that allows you to achieve your ideal results based on your individual goals and anatomy. Based on your individual treatment plan, here is what you can expect during your breast lift surgery procedure:

1. Anesthesia

  • Breast lift surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia to ensure a comfortable and pain-free experience during surgery.
  • Small minor touch-up lifts or lifts involving just adjusting the nipple areolar complex can sometimes be done under local anesthesia.

2. Incision Patterns

  • Incision pattern depends on the degree of sagging, the amount of excess skin, and your individual goals.
  • Common techniques include: Crescent - incision partially around the areola to make minor adjustments to the nipple or areola position.
  • Periareolar/Circumareolar: circular incision around the areola
  • Lollipop: circular incision around the areola with a vertical line down to the breast crease
  • Anchor/Inverted-T: periareolar with vertical and horizontal breast crease incisions

3. Lifting & Reshaping

  • Excess skin is removed meticulously to enhance lift and contours.
  • The underlying breast tissue is tightened and reshaped with internal sutures.
  • The breasts are lifted to a higher, more youthful position
  • The nipple and areola are repositioned to a natural, elevated location.

4. Closing Incisions

  • The remaining skin is re-draped over the new breast contours.
  • Incisions are closed with dissolvable sutures followed by surgical tape.
  • Dressings are applied to incision sites.

What conditions does Breast Lift Surgery address?

Breast lifts can be customized to address a broad range of concerns, and can also be combined with breast augmentation for patients seeking increased volume. Depending on your personal treatment goals, your breast lift can be designed to address:

  • Sagging breasts
  • Volume loss in the upper poles of the breasts (or a deflated appearance)
  • Breast asymmetry
  • Nipples that point down

What Areas Of The Body Can Breast Lift Surgery Address?

PURE Cosmetic Center Logo

While reshaping and elevating the breasts, a mastopexy can be combined with other plastic surgery procedures to address various areas of the body at once. For example, breast lifts and breast augmentation procedures are often performed alongside abdominoplasty (or tummy tuck surgery) and liposuction to maximize results and minimize overall downtime.

What are the benefits of Breast Lift Surgery?

Breast lift surgery allows you to address multiple concerns at once, depending on your aesthetic desires. For patients who are unsatisfied with the shape or appearance of their breasts, a breast lift can be an empowering experience, delivering a long-lasting confidence boost by:

  • Lifting the breasts to a more youthful position
  • Enhancing breast symmetry
  • Nipple repositioning
  • Create fuller, perkier breast contours

Plan For Your Best Experience

Am I a candidate for Breast Lift Surgery?

Breast lift surgery is most appropriate for women whose breasts have lost their youthful shape and firmness, causing them to sag or droop. Ideal breast lift candidates are generally satisfied with their breast size but wish to restore a perkier, more elevated breast position. This includes those experiencing breast ptosis (or droopiness) from aging, gravity, pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuations, heredity, or loss of skin elasticity.

Breast lift patients should be in good overall health without conditions affecting healing, be non-smokers, and have realistic expectations about their results. For patients who plan on being pregnant in the future, it is generally best to wait to undergo a breast lift until after your pregnancy journey is complete. And, as with any cosmetic surgery procedure, you should be committed to following postoperative instructions in order to maximize your results and minimize your risks

Breast Lift Recovery

After Your Surgical Procedure

While it does take some time to heal after a breast lift, recovery is generally smooth. You should expect some swelling, bruising, and minimal discomfort for the first couple of weeks after your breast lift. Most of our patients experience little to no discomfort when following our medication regimen. Light activities like walking can and should be resumed relatively quickly, but vigorous exercise and any strenuous motions that strain the chest will need to be avoided for 4-6 weeks. Your swelling will steadily decrease over 2-3 months.

As swelling subsides, the full results of your breast lift will become increasingly apparent, though it may take as long as a year for your scars to fully fade. We also provide advanced scar care with silicone taping and lasers to help improve your results. Following your doctor's postoperative instructions is the best way to ensure your smoothest recovery and most beautiful results following your breast lift procedure.

Breast lift Results

For women struggling with sagging, deflated breasts, a breast lift can provide renewed self-confidence. You can expect to achieve a rejuvenated, rounder breast shape and increased symmetry between the two sides.

While the effects of gravity are inevitable over time, a breast lift offers enduring results by turning back the clock on breast ptosis. With their firmer, uplifted bustline, patients can regain body confidence and feel more feminine and youthful in clothing and swimwear for years to come.

Breast Lift FAQs

Because a breast lift (or mastopexy) is often more complex than breast augmentation procedures, it tends to be more expensive than breast implant surgery. However, for patients seeking a naturally rejuvenated look and feel, a breast lift is a worthwhile procedure with high patient satisfaction.

Most patients report losing 10-20% in size as a result of breast lift surgery. This is because excess skin and breast tissue will need to be removed in order to tighten and lift the breasts.

Like any major surgical procedure, breast lifts do come with some risks. While complications are rare, it is important to discuss your goals and concerns with an experienced and reputable plastic surgeon like Dr. Dave Lee to ensure optimally safe treatment.

With a healthy lifestyle and stable weight, your breast lift results can last a decade or longer! While mastopexy does not slow the aging process, it does essentially reset the clock, allowing you to enjoy youthfully feminine contours for much longer.

Because a breast lift involves removing excess skin and lifting the underlying tissue, you will retain the full volume of your breasts, though it will be redistributed. However, you should expect to be about 10-20% in size after surgery. If you would like to maintain or increase the cup size of your breasts, breast implants or fat transfers can be incorporated for increasing volume and fullness.
